Puppets bring joy in Gaza
Throughout October, our partners were incredibly busy, brave, resourceful and creative – as always! They were planning and preparing for a puppet tour, that covered 12 locations in and around Gaza city reaching around 1,500 children to bring them moments of joy, and learning, in these dark times.
“Simsim” (‘sesame’ in Arabic) shows visited hundreds of kids and their families, bringing them messages that will help them to survive amid the daily horrors of the Israeli destruction of Gaza. Puppet show scripts include storylines focussed on health and hygiene, and how to deal with unexploded ordinance.
The shows also promote the values of solidarity, respect, tolerance and cooperation. War destroys infrastructure – schools, hospitals, universities, art centres, roads – but it also damages the social networks that make up the fabric of life. Through “Simsim” shows, children hear messages that reinforce these values.
The pilot phase in October was so successful, that our partners are now planning a second tour to reach more children and their families.
See a ‘behind-the-scenes’ look at how our partners created “Simsim” below to bring moments of joy to Gaza’s children.
